Royal Dutch Shell, commonly known as?Shell, is a British-Dutch multinational oil and gas company headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands.
Founded in 1907, Shell is the fifth-largest company in the world. The company is active in every area of the oil and gas industry, including exploration, research, production, refining, and shipping.
Shell has divisions in more than 70 countries, including 44,000 service stations and produces 3.7 million barrels of oil every day.
The company has been heavily criticized for its response to oil spills. A Dutch court ordered Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s Nigerian unit to compensate for oil spills in two villages over 13 years ago. Shell Nigeria is liable for damages from pipeline leaks in the villages of Oruma and Goi, the Hague Court of Appeals said in a ruling. Shell said that it should not be liable, as the spills were the result of sabotage.
Royal Dutch Shell maintains a corporate office in The Hauge, Netherlands.
